What are the main non-destructive testing (NDT) methods for welds?+
Visual inspection (VT — EN ISO 17637): always first. Dye penetrant testing (PT — EN ISO 3452): open surface defects. Magnetic particle testing (MT — EN ISO 17638): surface and sub-surface defects on ferromagnetic materials. Ultrasonic testing (UT — EN ISO 17640): internal defects. Radiographic testing (RT — EN ISO 17636): volumetric visualization of internal defects. The choice of method depends on the material, thickness, and type of defect sought.
What qualifications are required for welders?+
Welders must be qualified according to EN ISO 9606 (fusion welding of steels and alloys) or EN ISO 9606-2 (aluminium). The qualification is valid for 3 years, with renewal every 6 months if the welder practices (employer attestation). Welding procedure specifications (WPS) must be qualified per EN ISO 15614. For steel construction: EN 1090 requires fabrication shop certification (EXC2 to EXC4).
What are the most common welding defects?+
Internal defects: porosity (gas inclusion), blowholes (elongated cavities), lack of fusion, lack of penetration, slag inclusions, cracks (the most critical). External defects: undercut (notch at the weld toe), excessive reinforcement, collapse, arc strikes, spatter. EN ISO 5817 classifies imperfections into 3 quality levels: D (moderate), C (intermediate), B (stringent). Class B is required for structures subject to fatigue.
Who can perform non-destructive testing of welds?+
NDT operators must be certified per EN ISO 9712 (formerly EN 473). 3 levels: level 1 (execution under supervision), level 2 (execution + interpretation + report), level 3 (technical responsibility, method selection, validation). Certification validity: 5 years, with recertification. The inspection body must be accredited for regulatory inspections.
What regulations apply to welded pressure equipment?+
The European PED (Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU) mandates design, fabrication and inspection according to harmonized standards (EN 13445 for vessels, EN 13480 for piping). Welding must be performed by qualified welders (EN ISO 9606), with qualified procedures (EN ISO 15614). NDT inspection is mandatory at 100% for categories III and IV. An accredited inspection body certifies compliance.
