Frequently Asked Questions
What are the legal obligations regarding rodent control?+
The Departmental Health Regulations require property owners to keep their premises free from rodents and insects. In public buildings and food industry, a pest control plan is mandatory. Municipal orders can mandate rodent control. In food service, the pest control plan is part of the Sanitary Control Plan verified by the health authority.
What is Integrated Pest Management (IPM)?+
IPM (Integrated Pest Management) is the recommended approach: prevention first (proofing — sealing access points, waste management, hygiene), monitoring (monitoring traps, regular inspections), chemical intervention as a last resort and in a targeted manner. This approach complies with the European directive 2009/128/EC on the sustainable use of pesticides. Biocidal products used must be authorized (EU regulation 528/2012).
What certifications exist for pest control companies?+
The Certibiocide certification has been mandatory since July 1, 2015, for any company using professional biocidal products. The certificate is issued after training and examination, valid for 5 years. Voluntary professional certifications include CEPA (Confederation of European Pest Management Associations) certification and various national quality labels.
How to identify a bed bug infestation?+
Signs: aligned or grouped bites (arms, legs, neck), black spots on bedding (droppings), blood traces on sheets, characteristic sweet smell, presence of adult insects (4-7 mm, reddish-brown, flat), whitish eggs (1 mm) in mattress seams and bed frame crevices. Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) do not transmit diseases but cause allergic reactions. Treatment usually requires 2-3 visits at 15-day intervals.
What are the health risks associated with rodents?+
Rats and mice transmit over 30 diseases: leptospirosis (occupational disease — Leptospira through urine/contaminated water contact), salmonellosis (food contamination), hantavirus (inhalation of contaminated dust), rat-bite fever. Material damage: gnawed electrical cables (fire risk), damaged insulation, food stock contamination. A pair of rats can produce up to 500 offspring per year under favorable conditions.
