Frequently Asked Questions
What are the main requirements of RE2020?+
RE2020 (effective January 1, 2022) is based on 3 pillars: energy performance (Bbio, Cep, Cep_nr), summer comfort (DH — Degree-Hours of discomfort), and carbon impact (Ic_construction, Ic_energy). Thresholds are progressive: 2022, 2025, 2028, 2031. A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of the building is mandatory over 50 years.
What is the difference between Bbio, Cep and Cep_nr?+
Bbio (Bioclimatic Need): intrinsic building performance (insulation, orientation, solar gains), without systems. Cep (Primary Energy Consumption): total consumption including heating, cooling, DHW, lighting, ventilation. Cep_nr (non-renewable): share of consumption from fossil fuels. Bbio is the first indicator to check as it drives the design.
Is the RE2020 thermal study mandatory?+
Yes, for all new buildings subject to building permits since January 1, 2022 (residential) and July 1, 2022 (commercial). The RE2020 certificate at permit filing is mandatory (generated by calculation software). A final compliance certificate is also required at work completion. Non-compliance is a criminal offense (article L.152-4 CCH).
How is summer comfort calculated in RE2020?+
The DH (Degree-Hours) indicator measures summer thermal discomfort without air conditioning. It sums the differences between indoor temperature and an adaptive comfort threshold (26-28 degrees depending on night/day). Low threshold: 350 DH (beyond this, penalty on Cep). High threshold: 1,250 DH (prohibited, project must be revised). Passive solutions are prioritized: solar protection, night ventilation, thermal mass.
Which software is approved for RE2020 calculation?+
Software must use the Th-BCE 2020 calculation engine validated by CSTB. Main approved software: Pleiades+COMFIE (Izuba), ClimaWin (BBS Slama), Perrenoud U22win (Fauconnet), ArchiWIZARD (Graitec). The engine integrates LCA calculation (carbon impact) with the INIES database for environmental data of construction products.
