Frequently Asked Questions

How often must fire extinguishers be inspected?+
The employer must train staff in extinguisher use (article R.4227-39 of the Labor Code). In public buildings, evacuation drills are mandatory every 6 months (article MS 51). In businesses: evacuation drill at least semi-annually, training of first intervention team members (EPI), and if necessary second intervention team members (ESI). The safety register must record all training and drills.
How many fire extinguishers are mandatory in a building?+
In businesses: minimum 1 extinguisher per 200 m2 and per floor (article R.4227-29 of the Labor Code), with a minimum of 1 unit per floor. In public buildings: according to type and category (safety regulation, articles MS 38 et seq.). General rule: 1 x 6L water mist extinguisher per 200 m2 and per floor, plus specific extinguishers near risks (kitchen, boiler room, electrical room). Mandatory signage (NF EN ISO 7010).
What is the difference between extinguisher types (water, CO2, powder)?+
Water mist with additive (6L/9L): Class A (solids) and B (liquids) fires. Most common, non-hazardous. CO2 (2kg/5kg): Class B (liquids) and electrical fires. Clean, no residue, but limited range (2-3 m) and suffocation risk in confined spaces. ABC powder (6kg/9kg): versatile (A, B, C gas), but messy and corrosive. Foam: Class A and B fires, aqueous film. Choice depends on the risk identified in the fire risk assessment.
Who can perform fire extinguisher inspections?+
No mandatory certification under French law, but APSAD qualification (rule R4 - extinguisher inspection and maintenance) is the reference recognized by insurers. The technician checks: accessibility, general condition, pressure (gauge in green zone), manufacturing date, seal, labeling. They affix a dated inspection label and sign the safety register. Insurers may refuse compensation if extinguishers were not inspected.
What are the fire training obligations for businesses?+
