Frequently Asked Questions

What are the legal requirements for private swimming pools?+
Since 2004, private in-ground or semi-in-ground uncovered pools must be equipped with at least one standardized safety device: barrier (NF P90-306), alarm (NF P90-307), safety cover (NF P90-308), or enclosure (NF P90-309). Non-compliance carries a fine of 45,000 euros. Above-ground pools and indoor pools are exempt.
What chemical parameters should be monitored in a pool?+
pH: 7.0 to 7.4 (ideal 7.2). Free chlorine: 0.5 to 1.5 mg/L (private pool). Combined chlorine (chloramines): below 0.6 mg/L. Total alkalinity (TA): 80-120 mg/L. Total hardness (TH): 10-25 degrees. Stabilizer (cyanuric acid): 20-30 mg/L (max 75 mg/L, above which chlorine loses effectiveness). Temperature affects dosage (warmer water degrades chlorine faster). Test frequency: at least twice per week during swimming season.
When should you change the pool filter sand?+
Filter media (sand, glass, zeolite) should be changed on average every 5 to 7 years for sand, 8 to 10 years for recycled glass. Signs of replacement needed: cloudy water despite proper treatment, high filter pressure even after backwashing, clumped or channeled sand. Zeolite offers finer filtration (5 microns vs 30-40 for sand) and lasts longer. For cartridge filters: annual cartridge replacement.
How to winterize a swimming pool?+
Active winterization: reduced filtration (2-4h/day), maintained treatment, regular monitoring. Recommended in mild climates. Passive winterization: complete filtration shutdown, water level lowered below return jets, installation of gizzmos (anti-freeze floats) and winter plugs, addition of long-lasting winterizing product, winter cover. Drain pipes, pump and filter to prevent frost damage. Restart in spring when water reaches 12 degrees C.
What regulations apply to public swimming pools?+
Public pools are subject to the Public Health Code. Water quality control: monthly analysis by an approved laboratory, daily self-checks (pH, chlorine, transparency). Free chlorine: 0.4-1.4 mg/L. The sanitary logbook is mandatory. Lifeguard personnel must hold appropriate certifications. Display of analysis results is mandatory.
