Frequently Asked Questions

Does a landscaper need specific qualifications?+
No mandatory diploma is required to practice, but the title of "landscape designer" is protected (law of May 2, 2016) and reserved for graduates of recognized schools (ENSP Versailles, ENSAP Bordeaux/Lille). Landscaping companies must be registered with the commercial or trade registry. The Qualipaysage qualification (UNEP) certifies competencies. For roadworks and utilities (VRD), specific Qualibat qualifications may be required.
What permits are needed for landscaping work?+
No permit required for standard plantings and landscaping. Prior works declaration for: walls over 2 m high, terraces over 60 cm high or 20 m², above-ground pool over 10 m². Building permit for: garden shed over 20 m² (or over 40 m² in PLU urban zone). Protected areas: mandatory opinion from the Architect of French Heritage Buildings. Protected trees (EBC - Classified Wooded Areas): land clearing authorization required.
What standards apply to green space creation?+
NF P 98-331 (trenches for utilities), NF U 44-551 (growing media), booklet 35 of the CCTG (landscape development - public contracts), UNEP-AITF professional rules (13 rules covering turf, plantings, irrigation, playgrounds). For integrated irrigation: NF EN 12484 standard. Sports surfaces follow NF P 90-112 (natural grass fields) or NF P 90-113 (synthetic turf).
How to manage stormwater in a landscaping project?+
The water law (article L.214-1 of the Environmental Code) requires on-site stormwater management. Landscaping solutions: vegetated swales (infiltration + temporary storage), rain gardens, landscaped drainage trenches, green roofs, permeable surfaces (gravel, cellular pavers). Discharge rate is limited by local urban plans (often 5 to 10 L/s/ha). The impermeabilization coefficient must comply with local urban plan rules.
What warranty periods apply to landscaping work?+
Plant establishment guarantee: generally 1 year after planting (contractual, not statutory). Establishment depends on maintenance by the client. Completion warranty (1 year): landscape masonry, terraces, pathways. Ten-year warranty: retaining structures (retaining walls over 1.30 m), utilities, drainage. Plantings alone are not covered by the ten-year warranty. The landscaper's professional liability insurance covers third-party damages.
