Frequently Asked Questions

Is chimney sweeping mandatory and how often?+
The certificate must include: name and qualifications of the chimney sweep (qualified company), intervention address, sweeping date, type of flue swept (lined, clay, stainless steel), fuel used, observations on flue condition (cracks, abnormal deposits, seal defects), and confirmation that the flue was swept along its entire length by mechanical action (brush). Chemical sweeping alone is not sufficient.
What must a chimney sweeping certificate contain?+
Who must pay for chimney sweeping: tenant or owner?+
Chimney sweeping is a tenant charge (decree No. 87-713 of August 26, 1987, list of recoverable charges). The tenant pays for routine sweepings. The owner covers sweeping during vacancy periods and repair or compliance work on the flue (lining, relining). In co-ownership, sweeping of shared flues is a co-ownership charge voted at general assembly.
What are the signs of a dangerous chimney flue?+
Thick creosote (shiny black tar) on the flue walls, cracks in the masonry flue, soot or smoke traces on walls around the flue, persistent smoke odor when the fireplace is off, smoke blowback into the room, excessive condensation. A non-compliant flue can cause carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning or a chimney fire. Flue lining is the safest solution for old flues.
What are the regulations for wood stove installation?+
Installation must comply with NF DTU 24.1 (flue pipes) and NF DTU 24.2 (hearths and fireplaces). Safety distances: the connecting pipe must be 3 times its diameter from combustible materials (minimum 37.5 cm). The roof exit must extend 40 cm above the ridge. Combustion air intake is mandatory. Prior works declaration may be required. The installer must be RGE-certified for subsidies (MaPrimeRenov).
