Frequently Asked Questions
What DTU standards apply to tile installation?+
NF DTU 52.1 (bonded floor coverings), NF DTU 52.2 (adhesive floor coverings). For walls: NF DTU 55.2 (adhesive wall coverings). These DTU standards define flatness tolerances (3 mm under the 2 m straightedge for adhesive installation), adhesive types according to substrate and destination, and joint rules (movement joints every 60 m2 or 8 linear meters).
What is the difference between bedded and adhesive installation?+
Bedded installation: tiles laid on fresh mortar screed (3-5 cm thickness). Suitable for large formats and uneven floors. Adhesive installation: tiles fixed with tile adhesive on a flat and stable substrate (DTU 52.2). Faster, thinner, but requires a flat substrate (3 mm/2 m tolerance). Adhesive installation represents 90% of the current market and is mandatory on underfloor heating.
How to choose the right tile class?+
The UPEC classification (Wear, Puncture, Water, Chemical) defines usage: U2 (bedroom), U3 (living room, kitchen), U4 (building lobby, shop). EN 14411 standard classifies water absorption: porcelain stoneware (group BIa, <0.5%), glazed stoneware (group BIIa), faience (group BIII). For outdoor use: slip resistance coefficient R9 to R13 (DIN 51130 standard) and A+B+C classification (barefoot, DIN 51097 standard).
What joints should be planned to prevent tile cracking?+
3 types of mandatory joints (DTU 52.2): joints between tiles (2-5 mm depending on format), perimeter joints (5 mm minimum against walls and obstacles), movement/expansion joints (every 60 m2 max or 8 linear meters, and at each change of floor covering). Non-compliance with movement joints is the primary cause of debonding and cracking.
Does the ten-year warranty cover tiling?+
Yes, if the tiling constitutes a work rendering the building unfit for its intended purpose in case of defect. Massive floor tile debonding is covered by the ten-year warranty (French Supreme Court case law). A simple aesthetic defect (chip, color difference) falls under the completion warranty (1 year). The tiling contractor must mandatorily carry ten-year insurance.
