Frequently Asked Questions

What DTU standards apply to painting work?+
European REACH regulation limits hazardous substances. VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) labeling is mandatory (directive 2004/42/EC): interior matt wall paints <=30 g/L, gloss <=100 g/L. NF Environment or European Ecolabel certifies low-impact products. French regulation requires indoor air emission labeling (A+ to C) for construction and decoration products.
How to interpret paint finish levels (A, B, C)?+
Level C (standard): homogeneous appearance without pursuit of perfection, substrate defects remain visible under raking light. Suitable for technical rooms, parking, cellars. Level B (quality): regular surface, substrate defects corrected. Standard for residential and offices. Level A (high quality): perfectly smooth surface, no defect visible even under raking light. Required for prestige lobbies, showrooms. Price increases significantly from C to A.
What are the regulatory drying times between coats?+
DTU 59.1 requires compliance with drying times indicated by the manufacturer on the product data sheet. General guidelines: acrylic paint (water-based) 2-4h between coats, glycero paint (solvent-based) 12-24h, epoxy 12-16h, polyurethane 16-24h. Drying depends on temperature (min 5C, optimal 15-25C), humidity (<80% RH) and ventilation. Painting outside these conditions constitutes a workmanship defect.
Lead in old paints: what regulations apply?+
Lead-based paints (white lead) have been banned since 1949. The CREP (Lead Exposure Risk Assessment) is mandatory for housing built before 1949 upon sale or rental. If the CREP reveals lead at concentration >1 mg/cm2 in degraded condition, the owner must carry out risk elimination works. Work on lead paints requires specific protection measures (decree of May 12, 2009): containment, PPE, waste management.
What environmental standards apply to paints?+
